🧼Wednesday-13th August🧼 Favourite soap characters
It's so difficult to choose my favourite characters as I love and hate more than one from each soap and it changes from time to time. Who are yours and why do you love or hate them?
Covering all the soaps- there are so many to mention!!!
My favourite Emmerdale villain's - Thomas (Tom) King Junior was one of my most hated characters for what he put Belle through with the abuse. The actor James Chase is brilliant though and if people hate the character then they are playing it well.
Cameron Murray was a great bad boy character in Emmerdale, the relationship with Debbie, the affair with Chas (Debbie's Aunt) and him killing his boss/love rival Carl King and also Gennie (Chas's half sister) because she found out about everything. The reveal of it was shown in the LIVE episode for the 40th anniversary which I remember was very thrilling!
Dominic Power who played Cameron is also a brilliant actor and I loved him in Hollyoaks too playing the goodie handyman Dave Williams but was hiding that he was a killer and was revealed as the infamous 'Blue'
I've realised when I'm watching the classic soaps that I love loads of the senior characters.
Emmerdale - Betty Eagleton - One of local village gossips! She was such a funny comedic character but she always liked to help people where she could and was very sympathetic too. But she was a battle axe and gave as good as she got and wouldn't shy away of telling people what she thought of them.
Coronation Street- Jack Duckworth & Vera Duckworth are some of my all time favourite characters - You just cant beat these two for the serious drama but also the comedy. Even though they squabbled a lot, their love for one another shone through.
Betty Williams Always found her behind the bar or living room or kitchen at the Rovers Return. She was fiesty for an old lady! lol Who remembers Betty's famous hotpot? (Lancashire Hotpot is one of my favourite meals!) Here is the recipe below
Serves 4.Ingredients:1 1/2lb/675g neck of lamb
1.5lb/675g potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
1 large onion, chopped
3/4 pint/425ml chicken stock,
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 bayleaf
1 tablespoon flour2oz/50g butter
Salt and pepper
Method: Preheat the oven to 170 degrees Celsius/375 degrees Fahrenheit/gas mark 5.
Melt half the butter over a high heat in a heavy bottomed frying pan. Add the meat and fry until nicely browned. Put the fried meat into a casserole dish.
Fry the onions in the frying pan juices, adding more butter if necessary. When soft, sprinkle on the flour and stir. As the flour paste starts to colour, add the stock a few tablespoons at a time, while stirring continuously.
Add the Worcestershire sauce and salt and pepper to taste. Pour the liquid and onion mix over meat in the casserole dish and mix well.
Add the bay leaf to the pot, then arrange the sliced potatoes over the meat in overlapping layers. Brush the top layer with the remainder of the butter.
Cover the dish with tin foil and place on the top shelf of the oven for two hours. Uncover and cook for a further 30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown.
I would love to have a Betty's hotpot in the Rovers!! I think its still served in the Rovers even now, I wonder if its still her recipe lol
If anyone tries this recipe, let me know and show us your photos! (It's probably more of a Autumn/Winter dish but why not try it in the Summer!
I will continue this topic as the characters and actors are such a big part of the soaps. I've not even got onto Eastenders or Hollyoaks properly yet lol
